Great American Eclipse 2017
My View of The Eclipse From My Backyard
After looking through the eclipse glasses (and having watched NASA's livestream of the eclipse in Oregon and Montana) I was so excited I decided I did want to try to photograph it after all. I tore one of my eclipse glasses in half and removed the ear piece, then taped the lens to a double layer of aluminum foil with an opening cute out for the eclipse safety lens. I focused on the tall trees with my settings at f/22 1/320 sec and ISO200 and shot this. Just one shot and I was happy. I don't think I could have done any better than this, considering my little Rebel DSLR, 50mm lens, and makeshift filter.
Not Really Photographing the Eclipse
With my kit lens at 18mm wide, I don't think there was any danger. I've pointed my camera toward the sun many times. This is 2:48 (according to my camera clock) which is 6 minutes after our maximum eclipse, and to my eye, with the protective glasses, still nearly 80% of the sun was covered.
