2017 Project 52
Week 48 {phtoographer choice} Lighting Up the Xmas Tree
Too silly? Definitely interesting, at least.
Week 41 {Animal in my favorite style}
My favorite style of photography is documentary but this dog I met on the street with his family was very active so most of my shots came out blurry. I was a bit nervous doing this with strangers.
Week 39 Change of Season - Part 2
The pool picture means more to me personally. But here's a more universally understandable change of seasons photo.
Week 39 Change of Season - Part 1
Loriella Pool, where we spend many summer afternoons, now sits empty and cold.
Layers of Shells on the Beach at Chippokes Plantation State Park - I process my photos in Lightroom and I don't like to spend a lot of time on it. Mostly I just use the basic panel and sometimes HSL if I want to adjust the color. I dabbled with presets a couple of years ago, but don't really care for them. I like clean, natural edits. I might exaggerate color though because I like it so much.
Week 34 {Street Photography} Caroline Avenue, Fredericksburg, Joggers
Closer to the center of town, my favorite part, with tree-lined streets, lots of people enjoying exercise and fresh air, and old buildings full of history. #2017CMP52 #clickinmoms
Week 34 {Street Photography} Some Fredericksburg, Virginia Residents
Further out from downtown you can find fast food chains and there's less of the feel of a history-filled town. #2017CMP52 #clickinmoms
Week 33 {Composition: Point of View} My Kitchen This Evening
After I cleaned the kitchen I felt like documenting how my kitchen looks nowadays. In many ways it's the same. I was looking at some very old photos (like circa 2007) and saw the same fruit and veggie bowls. Different food of course, but the dishes have been there for at least a decade. They have been one of my most used wedding gifts. * * * (journaling added 6 days later, when I decided to make this my Week 33 photo) I'm still struggling to pick up my camera regularly, so I'm just happy when I do get inspired, even if it's not a perfect example of the week's assignment. I do think of point of view a lot anyway. I don't usually just take pictures from a standing position, but crouch, stand on tiptoes, climb something, and move around a lot. But my perspective here was a kind of a joy at my full fruit and veggie bowls, in the backdrop of a newly cleaned kitchen, so I placed the bowls prominently in the frame, but choosing a wide angle to show it all. (I actually put my old kit lens back on my camera for this. This is 18mm.)
Week 32 {photographer's choice} Foggy For My Morning Walk
We don't get a lot of fog so I don't get a lot of practice photographing or editing it. I tried to make it look the way it looked to my eyes.
This week we practiced critiquing our pictures when we take series of the same subject and choosing our best one. I photographed this breakfast plate from just about every angle you can imagine. I might not have spent enough time on the photography though; I was hungry! :) While processing my pictures, I decided this is my favorite composition. I do wish I'd removed the black cord and that I'd had just a little wider depth of field to include the entire plate. But other shots included too much of the background or just small portions of the food. My second favorite focused on the strawberries and that looks more artistic, but I was going for a more documentary photo and want the stuff partly visible in the background, showing what's going on in our lives currently. This is also very colorful, something that can be seen in most of my favorite photos.
Week 30 {"Now Do The Opposite"}
Last week we thought about our favorite genre of photography and what stylistic elements we love. This week, the assignnent is to shoot something that would be our least favorite choice. Asking a stranger to pose for me - portraiture -- would probably be the most opposite of my preferred genre -- family photojournalism -- but I'm not really up for that right now. I feel like I have photographed genres I don't care as much about while using my preferred styles -- bright, cheerful, colorful, and realistic -- several times before though. Particularly when I go on photoshoots with my local photography club. Sometimes I go just to hang out with other photographers, even if the subject isn't that interesting. You might say I'm engaging in "social photography." :) Here's an example. I do care about Richmond, but I wasn't really wanting to photograph it from across the river. I just wanted to participate in a photowalk and pick up my neglected DSLR at the beginning of June. But this is warm, colorful, and realistic just like all my pictures I love.
Week 29 {my favorite} Fans of baseball and/or Rhiannon
Rhiannon was invited to sing the national anthem for the Richmond Flying Squirrels on July 27. This Project 52 assignment was not just to pick a favorite picture but think about our favorite genre of photography. For me, to put it simply, it's documentary. Or sometimes I call it family photojournalism. But that's not the only thing I enjoy photographing. I also like to photograph architecture, nature, food, street scenes, lots of things! I think what all my favorite photos have in common is that the things I photograph, like the people, are the things I really admire, respect, love. In nature, I love starbursts, certain flowers, color combinations, and beauty (like the bokeh behind the wisteria I photographed earlier in the year for this project; I don’t love wisteria particularly. I’ve always loved sunsets. And the sky. And animals. And snow still fascinates me. Oh, and the potato chips (another P52 photo earlier this year) and the phone I photographed a couple of days ago are not just things; they tell something about me. I love potato chips. We made changes in our phones this summer. I love to record my life. Often that means people pictures, but sometimes it’s stuff; things in my life. Now, I passed up a lot of iPhone photos while searching for my favorites. So I have developed an appreciation for quality photography. That’s another tie between the people and nature photography. I like bright, cheerful photos. I like color, though not overly vibrant. I rarely convert to black & white. I like my photos realistic, though I will take advantage of the tools in Lightroom to enhance a sunset and other nature scenes. This photo is probably wont be one of my all time favorites because it has several flaws I don't like, but it's my most recent favorite. It documents an important event for my family and I love the connection and naturalness in it.
